What is Emo?

Emo is a slang term which can be used to describe a style of fashion, attitude, or taste which stems directly from the hardcore punk scene. Becoming vastly popular around 2005, Emo is now a widespread and general term used to describe a certain genre of music, a certain fashion style, or an apathetic and depressed emotive state.

What are the origins of Emo?

The term itself is believed to have originated in the 1980s and referred to a genre of music which was related to the hardcore punk music scene. Some bands which were originally labeled as emo included Embrace, Rain, and Rites of Spring. Over time, the term emo has grown to become much more widespread and openly used. For example, once referring only to music, it can now refer to many other things such as style and attitude. One of the main meanings and uses of emo is to convey rock music which employs apathetic lyrics which are fuled by emotion, hence the moniker, Emo.
